Villar also slammed Agriculture officials for focusing on the processing of importation permits instead of “developmental programs” for farmers in the provinces.
“Palagi kayong regulatory. Pag import permit busy na busy sila, pero pag developmental wala,” she said.
Department of Agriculture officials present in the hearing did not refute Villar’s outburst, after the senator warned them to stop allocating more funds to office expenditures.
The Philippines has been lagging behind its regional peers in the production of rice, sugar, coconut, and dairy, Villar said, citing data from the Department of Finance.
“Tigilan niyo na ‘yang overhead niyo. Puro kayo overhead [expenses], wala kayong program. Kaya ang sama-sama ng Agriculture natin,” she said.
Alam na this!
Writer.
The Philippines cannot feed itself…so it must import everything, from food to basic necessities to all kinds of materials needed. Imports are like “shabu”…they are addictive…
We have the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Laguna…however, we cannot produce high yielding varieties of rice to become self sufficient in rice. We encourage farmers, to diversify their food production. We also encourage Aquaculture for food production.
With many vacant land areas in our country. We must encourage food production in all areas. On the other side, birth control must be implemented. The Filipinos are producing more babies than food !
Nah, it’s the shitty education system that is making them dumb.
Villar is only echoing what mothers of her generation believe, including my own mother: feed them cow’s milk so they will grow healthy. No point trying to challenge their view. Too bad the heaviest of Villar’s bashers are too politically colored to understand this.
Agreed, there’s this notion in the Philippines that “Bigger Government” equals “Better Services”. Many do not understand the concept of “Self-sufficiency” and that “Over-regulation” means that it’s more expensive to start your own livestock or agricultural business when you cannot make a profit while following and paying for regulatory permits that will make you go bankrupt, it’s the reason why there’s so many foreign firms and companies who can afford to own land and do business here while the average Filipino cannot compete. And the answers I keep seeing from the Great Social Media Sphere in the Philippines is “Those companies are just greedy!” like those dumb communists, so they have to share and give more taxes to the gigantic bureaucracy that is Government, and there’s also “The Government is not doing enough!” asking for to raise more taxes and funding on an incompetent Department of Office Supplies that still has not undertaken their broken promises to make the Philippines even barely reach the level of technology and techniques used by Thailand or Vietnam. And there’s the Filipino farmers who live on government subsidies, they cannot or do not want to compete, and they can barely make a profit. And to Leftists who say that is the “Evil of Capitalism”, no, that’s called the Free Market, if you cannot compete, and yourself and the Government still can’t help, you got no one to blame but yourself to empowering a bloated bureaucracy.
