With just a four-word tweet, Sandro Marcos, son of Vice-Presidential candidate Bongbong Marcos, attracted all sorts of “mockery” from the anti-Marcos buzzing bees again:
As handily summed up by local media, anti-Marcos people were quick to remind Sandro, that the movie Rogue One is “a story of a rebellion trying to overthrow an oppressive tyrannical empire similar to what happened in the 1986 EDSA revolution.”

The sentiment most common among the reactions seems to follow along the lines of: ”Oh the irony of a Marcos enjoying a movie about rebellion.”
There is no irony here, however; there is only the desperation of the anti-Marcos people to “get one up” over the Marcoses, however trivial or insignificant.
Unfortunately for them, however, it is the anti-Marcos people who end up looking like chumps (not really the first time) in ways they probably can’t even imagine.
First off, comparing the Rogue One rebellion to the 1986 EDSA People Power movement betrays a stubborn attempt to keep romanticizing the latter as a victory of “good against evil”. All it really was, essentially, was a power grab among entrenched political dynasties, a mere substitution of one group of self-interested people for another.
Secondly, mocking Sandro Marcos – or any other member of that clan, for that matter – in no way compensates for the collective failure of the Filipino people to hold the Marcoses accountable for whatever they allegedly did.
Filipinos, the anti-Marcos movement in particular, would do well to remember these.
I guess, in the Philippines, one can’t even enjoy entertainment, and take it at face value, without it being politicized and used against him/her.
Contrary to popular belief, the national sport in the Philippines is not basketball, it’s making issues where they don’t exist.
Did Sandro Marcos have it coming? Should he have “thought before he tweeted”? Actually, everybody should. What’s clear is that the people who didn’t think before tweeting are the anti-Marcos people. What’s worse is looking like morons and not even being aware of it.
It’s that simple, really.

And yes, that movie is great, and it’ll make you cry in the end if you’ll watch it, i’d watched it last week at the SM Cinema just a day before Rogue One was shown here in our country & I think it’s still shown in theaters. They said that this anime film might be an Oscar contender next year just like our very own Ma Rosa (hopefully both of them will make it to the Oscars nod). So better check it out guys, especially to Sandro Marcos, just my 2 cents. 😉

If you allege that a Filipino has stolen something, you’ll probably be right just by pure chance. It’s like alleging that the sea is wet.
What Marcos did was much, much too big to sweep under the carpet. 30 million Filipinos watched him do it. His closest aides and family are quite open about what he did – they know that crime is neither frowned upon nor punished in this country, so there’s no need to hide it.
The only bit that’s open to debate here is exactly what, or how much, the Marcoses stole.
Completely fair to point out that anyone should be able to enjoy fiction as fiction, of course, but if you post your brainfarts on twitter, you’ve automatically accepted that a few billion idiots will tweet back.
I generally don’t disagree with what you say, Marius, but I do find the use of that “weasel word” necessary because the Marcoses have not been categorically convicted here. I take the position, of course, that only a court of law can definitively say whether someone committed a crime, and to what degree. Just because I know someone stole doesn’t mean I can prove he did.

I absolutely will dispute that, and quite frankly I think this attitude is the #1 reason the Philippines looks like it does. “You can’t prove I did it therefore I didn’t” runs very, very deep in Filipino culture.
99 out of 100 criminals are never convicted by the courts. That’s because the country doesn’t have a functioning justice system, not because they’re innocent.
In any case, you’re quite wrong. The Marcos family have been repeatedly convicted and then acquitted of various sorts of wrongdoing (including murder), which basically proves the point I made above: the country has no functioning justice system.
They have lost civil suits in other countries, resulting in the award of damages to victims.

These so-called “anti-Marcos” feel like chumps for believing that everything could end well for them. They feel foolish for allowing themselves to be lead into a false sense of security and for letting themselves experience their “own happiness” just to make them “feel good” about their own selfish stupid selves.

It’s also because many people still believe in the idiotic belief that “abuse runs in the blood” and being associated by blood makes you guilty. You can still trace some doings of Martial Law to Bongbong Marcos. Sandro Marcos obviously never reached that. Yet some people would like to treat Sandro as if he was a dictator.
