What’s all the fuss about? Filipinos by now should be very well familiar with the way Floyd Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao in today’s bout. The key insight here is what disappointed Filipinos are now telling themselves:
Mayweather may have won, but Pacquiao was the better fighter.
Mayweather was obviously the smarter fighter. He got the system to work for him. He got the points without having to fight. Sound familiar? That’s because the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight was a microcosm of Philippine politics. In Philippine politics, the usual people routinely win on points (i.e., they get the votes). But do the votes actually determine the true leaders? Filipinos already know the painful answer to that question.

Funny that Filipinos read the outcome of today’s fight right. We see where the points went but know at heart who the better fighter was, because he fought well. Nonetheless, it is clear who the system regards as the winner today. Fortunately for Filipinos, they have a choice (at least in their heads) who they will regard as their winner.
Unfortunately it is not like that in Philippine politics. Like Mayweather, perhaps, Filipino politicians can run around the ring taking jabs at their opponents every now and then to score points while the true leaders go after them with attacks of real substance. But unlike Mayweather who attracted jeers with his winning strategy, Filipino politicians and their empty jabs routinely get the cheers plus the win. And the real leaders who throw the real hard punches — those with actual ideas to field against their foes get the jeers. Or worse, are simply ignored.
If only Filipinos can read a political match as well as they could read a boxing match. If only they could be as good with identifying the real fighters outside of the ring as well as they do inside it.
Filipino politicians are smart in the sense that they know how to work Philippine politics for the win, just like Mayweather won against Pacquiao by being the smarter boxer today.

I wish it’s easy to pick good leaders. But then again, politics is anything but easy.
I’m pretty sure a lot of Filipinos nowadays had become smart enough to know who the good leaders are. The real question is can they actually act on it w/ an “invisible blade (i.e. money, threats, etc.)” directed on their throats?
This fight has the word “mafia” written all over it. Just like our society, where the current powers-that-be got the masses on the balls.
But this actually presents a lesson. If we (the true Filipino patriots) want to win our struggle for change, we must know the game like the palm of our hands, and use it to our advantage.
Let me quote Edmund Burke: “When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.”
‘MAFIA” ? HA, that is funny. its called boxing, not street fighting, not Mixed-Martial Arts…BOXING ! Try THIS: Get in the ring and have Manny Paquiao stand 6 inched away from you, then have him try as hard as he can to hit you.Do YOU THINK you could make him miss by more than a foot? I doubt it,he would hit you and maybe hurt you.Floyd did exactly that….and MADE HIM MISS, and MISS BADLY and then he said ‘HA, ya missed’ and punched Paquiao in his face. Do you think YOU could do that ? That is called ‘The ART of BOXING’,and that is why the guy won and Paquiao lost.Get over it, its not like Paquiao is buying your dinner now, is it?
Problem is what’s the “true leaders” meaning for ordinary pinoy; who don’t have enough education nor enough way/means to determine or to at least check the track records of a politicians or running to be leaders? Majority of the voters were mostly willing to sell their votes for a small cash and for the sake of pakikisama not because of patriotism.
“Majority of the voters were mostly willing to sell their votes for a small cash and for the sake of pakikisama not because of patriotism.”
The same can also apply to those freeloaders who want pacquiao to win so that they can have a balato and free party with food.
It is not the better fighter, that wins the boxing match. it is the smarter fighter. Same as in war, the smarter General and strategist wins war.
In our politics, the best deceiver politician wins election. They are not smart. They perfected their Art of Deception, on voters.
Boxing is big business. See the promotions; the money involved; the cost of tickets, etc..
If you are not smart enough, you will bite, and your money is gone….
Better/Smarter=Same thing.
God works in mysterious ways. But for someone who has a very strong personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, such as I, it is easy to decipher these mysterious ways.
So let me tell you why God did not make Manny win. This is God’s way of telling Manny to focus less on personal glory and to serve the Filipino people instead. God given talents are never supposed to be used for personal gain and I am afraid to say that Manny has strayed from his true purpose in life. Manny should lead the Filipino people into greatness but he cannot do this while he is preoccupied in boxing. When he realizes his potential of being a greater leader than he was a boxer, only then will we see the greatness in God’s plan for the Philippines!
God has nothing to do with Pacquiao losing. Pacquiao is only good in boxing. Not good in leading a country. No education, no managerial experience…all he did was boxing…
Paquiao will be the President one day because Filipino’s like him.
Pretty sure Pastor Ernie is just a parody account. Whether he knows it or not.
Well, I guess Manny is hard headed and didn’t listen to God’s message way back in 2012 when he got knocked out by JMM.
@ Pastor Ernie, DID God tell you that? I MEAN, REALLY ? DID HE? Or was that somehow delivered to you magically ?
Did you ever think that MAYBE: God has more important things to do ,in other parts of HIS universe and doesn’t have the time to dictate what happens in such a meaningless excercise as a BOXING match ?
The Guy who calls himself a Pastor, may have mental issues. He is talking to God, and seeing things…
have you seen the rubber-ducky? quit that, ernie. have some ice cream.
Too bad that same strategy is probably going to cause boxing to die. People came in expecting a match to remember, two men slugging it out until one of them falls, not men hugging each other like they’re in a Brazzers video. Smart move or not, it made the fight boring, and after all that effort was spent hyping it up as “the Fight of the Century”.
Yeah but that’s the way Las Vegas boxing is right? So, why complain NOW when this SAME system gave Manny 57 victories? More victories than Mayweather at 48. Any dumbwitt can see that REAL boxing happens at the Olympics. Moreover, both Manny and Floyd seem to be like the best of friends.
No… I think we, the Filipino are the victims here by Manny, Floyd and Las Vegas Boxing. Does anybody even spend the same amount of money to watch Filipino Boxers in any thing in semblance of an Olympic game? I thought so.
seeing yourself as the victim in anything is your fault.YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM. To be clear, YOU ARE A VOLUNTEER!
Not a volunteer, but a “Willing Victim”. The same way that Filipinos are victimized by corrupt and self serving political leaders. Filipinos are “Willing Victims”…
There’s a system in boxing. There are rules. Sorry, those get followed.
Mayweather knew what he was doing. He knows Pac-man is very good at delivering hits so he took away that advantage first and struck hard. A perfect example of “work smart, not hard.”
However, the people who supported the loser will be sore and will call foul at the judges. Which is funny because many Americans, not just Filipinos were disappointed in the outcome. They came to see a brutal exchange of blows and instead they saw two grown men play tag and free hugs. Which is how Mayweather wanted it.
Now, while I know OFWS are disappointed, I’d wonder how the regular Filipinos feel about this. COnsidering there were millions who PRAYED WITH ALL THEIR MIGHT for Pacquiao to win.
Just like the Communists in the Philippines. They are getting jeered just because they’re “godless bastards”. When you analyze the accusations against them, the accusations are in fact baseless. Can easily be related to the MayPac fight. Well done!
If true Communism, not Social Feudalism, could be implemented in the Philippines the average person’s life would probably get better. EVER ASK YOURSELVES: Why the fuck am I being paid a measely P400 to work 10 hrs./day and not even have health benefits, where if I get sick I can at least go see a 3rd world doctor and maybe not fuckin die? it is because the fuckin…..WAIT….u know what? IF IF IF you Filipino’s do not already know, after decades of the same shit, I will not explain it,NOPE !!!!
AAMOF, its starting to look like you all enjoy being FITA, YEP !
Uh, did you even read history books? If you do, then you know what those savage Reds did to a lot of people, including the religious ones. Not to mention the religious sites that got torn down. All to remove any opposition to their so called noble cause.
Oh, well. commutards never listen to human reason. They’re too busy worshipping Lenin, Marx, Stalin and Mao.
Oh Please, Give FLOYD his due, he gave Paquiao a BOXING lesson. The better fighter was not Paquiao because if he was, he would have won….BUT HE DID NOT WIN, HE LOST !!!!
Floyd hit Paquiao with a couple of upper-cuts that just missed putting the ‘lights’ out, and anyone who saw them knew they just missed, but connected enough to score.and now, of course, there are excuses excuses excuses….which is BAD SPORTSMANSHIP, and classless. People trash Mayweather all the time and even when he gives a guy a boxing lesson, he still gets the excuses and no credit for being the Worlds best BOXER, and he is. Floyd will be long gone before many people realize what a talent he is, the whole idea of BOXING is to hit the other guy while not getting hit.48-0 proves how GREAT the guy is.PERIOD.
OH BULLSHIT, PAQUIAO LOST BECAUSE FLOYD BEAT HIM !
EXCUSES ARE FOR CHILDREN AND LOSERS !!!!
Floyd for President
Floyd for the Harlem Globetrotters
Floyd SR For Mayor of Las Vegas
Floyd is a master tactician, Many is a brawler.
Rather similar to when Sugar Ray Leonard fought Marvin Hagler in 86.
He lost, BUT it is only a BOXING match, yes?it seems that the entire nation of Filipino’s collective self-worth has been shattered and it is unacceptable (which is a completely laughable notion to start with,WTF?). It seems a frailty common to 3rd world people’s that they must prevail in their endeavours or opinions, and can never lose or be wrong because their self-worth is it at stake (OH NO !). Even when they have to invent injuries OR revert to laws that have been abolished to get away with their wrongdoings. The recent quoting of the ‘Aguinaldo Doctrine’ in some sort of case involving Binay (the particulars I am not familiar with) is a good example. Pulling that crap out of his ass as if it is relevant today is an excellent example of going to any lengths to prove ones point, but at the same time NOT even realizing that the 1987 Constitution nullifies all of the actions and laws of the previous government and yet Filipino’s grant the doctrine equal weight in legal arguments.W-W-W-A-T TF? LOL.It is completely laughable and assinine as quoting an Executive Order made in 1982, by Marcos, as if it is somehow relevant in granting MJ Veloso legal aid, today. UH…NO NO NO,it doesn’t.That E.O. was vacated too, it no longer exists and yet, there it is…as if EDSA never happened.I trust you see my point. If not,Oh well.I’ll get over it.
Can you give real-life examples of real leaders in Philippine politics?
Dick Gordon?
You gave an example without conviction! You’re NOT sure and Doubtful of your Mr. Dick?! 😉
Yes, the dead guy whose plane fell out of the sky in 2011? Oh wait, that is not ‘real-life’ so, no,sorry! I can not.
Hmmm… you got me stumped with that question…
FERDINAND MARCOS! Believe IT or NOT! WE BLEW IT!

Ang pambansang… KAMAY NA BAKAL at walang iba kungdi si Davao City Mayor Rody Duterte. Sorry, Pacman. 😀
NO. Not that communist collaborator.
Do you think he’s a puppet to the Commie China? Think again! https://rodyduterteforpresident.wordpress.com/2015/04/23/duterte-calls-for-revival-of-rotc-as-part-of-self-defense-force-amid-chinas-aggressive-build-up-in-west-ph-sea/
At least the founding father of Singapore by the name of Lee Kuan Yew was once traded him as a communist before but when his city got separated from Malaysia 50 years ago, he’d quickly developed and thrived his country and became the least crime ridden nation in Asia. I could see that Mr. Duterte could do that to our country soon if he’ll become the next president of our country in 2016. If you want to know more about his leadership, just go to Davao City and take a look around it and you could see that it’s almost identical to Singapore, thanks to his strong political will and the love of this country & to his people just like LKY.
but here’s a good news, Mayor Duterte did pray & supported our Pambansang Kamao: https://rodyduterteforpresident.wordpress.com/2015/05/01/rody-prays-for-pacman/
P.S.
I wish that Pacman should had supported this guy instead of VP Binay on 2016 presidential election.
Meron din Pambansang Anino! Si Chavit Singson!
Minsan nasa kaliwa, minsan nasa kanan! Kahit walang kinalaman sa laban, palagi na ‘andyan ‘pag may kodakan ang Pacman!
And Mr. singson is THE master of photobomb when there’s a boxing schedule match on Pacquaio. 😀
Dick Gordon is one. So is Bayani Fernando. Another one would probably be Gibo Teodoro. i like to see how good these guys could be.
The quote under the picture above does not take into account todays excuses ,does it? The backlash against these statements is HUGE !! Western people do not like excuses, (Filipino’s might) Paquiao doesn’t know that…obviously. But his handlers do and shame on Roach and Joo Arum for not knowing and informing Paquiao.
There’s still some who I think didn’t get the point of this article. It’s not about boxing; it’s about the analogy of how Mayweather won and how politicians in the Philippines get their seats.
First of all, Mayweather won. Period. We may not be convinced or impressed but “A win is a win no matter how bad it is.” – A phrase that I often heard and applies to this one too. As a Filipino I too would like Pacquiao to win but hey if he loses regardless of the reason, it won’t matter. Move on. Leave the ranting to his camp. Let them seek a rematch if they deem it necessary to the delight of their fans. Anyway, if it had been the other way around, even if it is about numbers fans would have gladly, happily embraced the victory.
That’s behind us now. Time to face reality again. What’s on our national “table”?:
1. China occupying our territories;
2. Nepal had a disaster. Aren’t we going to extend some assistance? (I heard we already sent some people there but I wonder if the Nepali could be voters for Filipino politicians, would sending help there be faster and noisier?)
3. Mary Jane Veloso’s case and other Filipinos in a similar situation. – Trafficking
4. The PDAF scam (natatabunan!!)
5. Resolving the BBL issue.
6. The Mamasapano incident and everyone accountable to it (has justice been served?)
7. The Maguindanao massacre (same question in 6)
8. Upgrading of the AFP
9. The Binay family issue
10. What happened to the Reproductive Health bill?
11. Traffic in Metro Manila and the suggestions to decongest the capital
12. School is about to begin, are the schools, DepEd, and CHED already prepared? Are the students prepared already? (I’m sure the usual reply would be “we’re on vacation”.)
13. Illegal gambling
14. Prostitution
15. Drugs issue
And the list goes on and on. Lots of things to think about and do more than doing post-fight analysis. So before watching showbiz programs, knowing who’s actor is seeing who’s actress, again–>post fight analysis especially if it is not your job/profession, make use of time on more productive things.
I would like to make a comment on #6, actually there’s an irony news on the day that we’d watched Mayweather vs. Pacquaio match (no, I’m not talking about the NBA Playoffs elimination round match between Spurs and Clippers) but the Filipino terrorist by the name of Basit Usman was killed by the MILF: http://www.philstar.com/headlines/2015/05/04/1451104/afp-congratulates-milf-usman-kill-bares-photo
Pacquiao Mayweather fight is a good cover up for Aquino on these problems…diversionary tactic…the Yellow Media analysis of Pacquiao’s defeat is a good cover up , also.
totally unnecessary allegory, man. it’s called a strategy, and all the moves mw did were 100% legit – unlike un-statesmen-like politicians who bend the system to their bidding.
to me, the boxing hype is meh. you know what would be interesting though? manny vs royce gracie or even brock lesnar in some exhibition match.
speaking of politicians in our country, I wonder how will it feel to our politicians who’d went to Las Vegas and watched their fight on May 2 and they’d choose a bet to Manny Pacquaio and loose it and where did the money they’d really used it for the betting? Is it came from their own pockets or from our tax money that we’d paid it to the BIR almost everyday?
100% from their own pockets…
which they laundered from funds they pickpocketed much earlier from our tax money, so as to appear legit. No politician wants to steal blatantly enough because they’d lose in the long run if not re-elected.
Manny sucks. He is done. Get a new hero!
Actually, it’s the opposite. In sports and politics, the ones who have substance are the ones who are considered ‘boring’. Substance works in sports but not in politics, especially in the Philippines.
Politicians would spend more time planning their gimmicks than their platforms in elections and as a result, the one with more flamboyance but lesser substance wins over the duller but more substance candidates.
The same cannot be said in sports. The ones who have substance wins. Floyd Mayweather is a very good example of this. He came in the arena to win the match and not the fans in the fight against Pacquiao. He stuck to his strategy even though it’s bored everyone (including myself) to death but it worked. Another example is football/soccer team Chelsea. The team were crowned champions of England this season with 3 games left in the season. They’ve done this by playing a defensive-oriented style of football/soccer especially when playing against tough opponents. The fans find it boring and they made their feelings clear when they drew 0-0 against Arsenal; a team known for being stylish and attacking.
Because it’s sports, people wanted to see physical skills and strength or stamina. The greatest boxers are those who can sway their opponent with their punch. It is boxing! Fighting with the fists! If it’s only hit and not be hit but your punch cannot be felt and you’re running just so you can’t be hit, and the ringside serve as a catch net so you won’t fall, what kind of boxing is that?
A true leader is one who accepts defeat in the same way he accepts winning.
i thought mayweather was a heart fighter and pacquiao a brain fighter………well possibly a setup for rematch by pacquiao’s team
rematch? what rematch? those boxers are too old to play right now & they’d just thinking about getting more money & popularity in the end. :\
Manny Pacquiao is not the loser in this fight. The real losers are the fans especially the ones who paid tickets to MGM Grand and on PPV.
