There are only two ways to beat Jejomar Binay in the coming election (1) field a presidential candidate who can pose a credible challenge to him or (2) throw him in jail. The way things are going, it is likely that neither will happen. Pretty much every politician that can even be half a challenger to Binay is a bozo at best. And we all know where all these Senate “probes” go. Nowhere. So Binay may be bad, corrupt, a thief, a liar, a cheat, and all that, even “the last great crook” as ‘senator’ Antonio Trillanes IV was said to have called him. But the missing piece in all the noise and hoo-ha being generated by Binay’s enemies is a key one that is critical to propping up any hope of stopping his march to Malacanang: strategic direction.

More importantly, the different interested parties need to unite behind one candidate to beat Binay. If they don’t and, as has happened so many times in the past, all go their own ways and field their own presidential candidates they will have to work harder eroding his popularity numbers. If this election becomes a race involving, say, four candidates, Binay’s ratings will need to be further hammered down to 25 percent — if that is even possible (and granting, as I mentioned earlier, that these polls are, for argument’s sake, reliable predictors of voter behaviour).
The second challenge is even more formidable. How would one go about depriving Binay of his freedom in such a way that he will be unable to run for the presidency? The irony here is that the leader of the lynch mob currently “curcifying” Binay, ‘senator’ Trillanes, actually set a precedent for successfully running for Senator while he was in prison for rebellion!
So if it weren’t enough of a feat getting this big anti-Binay show-and-tell circus happening in the Senate moved over to a proper Philippine court (which, if we recall, is the only government body with the power to put people in prison), there will still be two hurdles ahead: navigating the more stringent standards of the court system to prove him guilty and convicting him, and then implement measures to prevent him from running for President while he is in jail. A long journey awaits, to say the least.
But of course, the traditional narrative is, as I write this, being spun. Binay seems to be toast — depending on who you ask, that is. The illusion that Binay is beat can, to be fair, persist up to the eleventh hour of the campaign. And then the voting starts. Filipino minds remain fair game to all sorts of election winning machinations up to the very last minute before they step into the polling booth. And even then, ballots are still subject to other machinations before they are counted. And even as they are counted, other machinations would then kick into gear to influence outcomes there as well.
In short, what Binay’s foes need is a kick-ass presidential-grade election winning machine that can work through all stages of the election winning effort — from the campaign, to greasing the voters at the eleventh hour, and to looking after their interests during the counting. It should be an end-to-end systematic effort to beat Binay. By the looks of it, Binay’s enemies are behaving in a way that is anything but. Bad news, considering Binay is a strong and wealthy politician and it will be an absolute big mistake to underestimate this man.
Will his challengers step up, organise themselves into that cohesive force, and work smarter by approaching the challenge in an intelligent manner? That remains to be seen.

BenignO, wouldn’t it be refreshing if all the potential opponents stopped the bullshit with the ‘defamation’ of Binay. Just stop the nonsense and get together and put out an intelligent platform for the next 6 years and undercut him that way. We all know he’s a crock, so let’s go around him and deal direct with his constituency telling them what we WILL DO rather than ‘bad mouthing him’ which appears to be a Filipino pass time.
Absolutely. That’s the whole point of elections — winning them by being the better candidate. The ‘opposition’ to Binay, it seems, does not have a better winnable candidate.

The saying about negative publicity comes from the advertising industry. You might be surprised about how some people actually buy it. Sometimes, that’s the only name they hear. When people in an area hear of a candidate for the first time, because they’re so cut off from civilization, they decide to use that little knowledge they have – whether negative or positive. That’s the only name they’ve heard, so they’ll put it on the ballot. And some people will reason, “oh, he’s being tagged a terrorist/other derogatory name by other people, so he must be oppressed.” So don’t count out what I explained.
Nope. even “Negative publicity” IS still publicity. Just take a look at a certain old guy; became a president despite the dirty stains he had, impeached, jailed, pardoned, and years later, almost won on his second attempt, and then settled down for now into just a local kingpin in town (a.k.a. “Mayor”).

There is an alternate way to beat Binay. I think it’s almost a done deal that he will be elected due to the masa vote. It costs money to buy their votes, but Binay has it as we all know.
What they need to do is field a “dummy” candidate who will take enough of the masa votes away from Binay. Basically someone who appeals to the same poor and uneducated voters, like a famous sportstar or celebrity that claims to represent the poor. That way they could take away 10-15% of Binay’s votes.
At the same time a quality person with very good policies is needed to get the majority of the educated voters.
Like! Robin Padilla for president! Willie for president! Piolo! Kris! Sharon! Binay votes divided by 6. Pero Sana 1 candidate lang for wise people to vote.
It’s a usual happening in Philippine politics that whoever America wants to be Philippine president will be 🙂 It happened during Magsaysay, Marcos, the Aquinos and the rest. Whoever was leading in surveys and public opinion years before the actual presidential elections usually loses or backs-out before the actual elections. A darkhorse presidential candidate usually comes in at the elevent hour of the filing for the candidacy and this is what will make JCB back-off, lose or slide down to senatorial level 🙂

I read somewhere here that those who don’t pay taxes should not be given the right to vote (except for students, maybe) because if you can’t afford to pay your taxes, either you’re a lawbreaker or relying on dole-outs. Except that the Congress would not even entertain the idea. Then Binay should be impeached before the filing of candidacy. Unfortunately his accuser finds it hard to prove him guilty of any crime. Then let’s have Gibo, Gordon, Marcos and Duterte to choose from in vice and presidential field. They have iron hand and better plans at least more than Poe and Roxas could pretend to have. Except that the Pinoy voters cling to the popular name they know better, who seems more honest and not corrupt, or whose past crimes are forgivable so long as they are on the same wavelength about issues that are important to them.

I am from Makati so I know kahit papaano out of lahat ng kurakot ni Binay my natikman yung mga tao, which is compare sa ibang city wala talaga at all, kahit isang slice ng cake but I would not vote for him still IF I have a better option but on the current line up parang lesser evil na lang ang option eh.
