Pork outrage vs viral videos: Filipinos get angry with the wrong head

Another week another viral video. I saw Ms Ilda’s earlier tweet where she expressed what seems to be exasperation over the attention “leaked” intimate videos routinely get…

Sigh…accdng to the site stats, most Pinoys would rather read about Chito, Neri, Wally & Yosh’s s*x video than about #porkbarrelscam

pork_barrel_yosh_riveraThat kinda makes me angry. There is a bigger scandal going on that effects a real impact on the wellbeing of millions of Filipinos. Just thinking about the numbers involved boggles my mind. Billions of pesos that could’ve gone to good things had been diverted to the bank accounts of a bunch of crooks. How far back it goes and how far into the term of PNoy this stealing has been tolerated is anybody’s guess for now. But I think for Filipinos to be left with nothing but guesswork for long is a grave injustice. Filipinos deserve to know the FACTS and not be left guessing!

Do Filipinos really care, though? The answer to that question may be a bit disheartening. It seems that instead of Filipinos using their precious bandwidth to support efforts to bring these bad guys to justice, they spend it downloading dirty videos.

Here’s what I think is the real problem with Filipinos and I think it is best expressed in the vernacular:

Hirap sa mga Pinoy, maling ulo ang nagagalit.

What’s up with all that sexual frustration anyway? Maybe there is something about the way otherwise facially-challenged men get it on with fresh-faced starlets in these grainy videos. I mean, jeez, Chito Miranda and this Eat Bulaga guy. WTF my fellow Pinays???

Then again, all that porn is just a microcosm of Philippine cinema. You get the same themes in Pinoy films. Hampas-lupa guy bags fair-skinned long straight-haired colegiala. That plot formula gets the hits too. Mediocre minds do think alike!

Thank God I am in good company! Senator Miriam Santiago is also mad as a hatter.

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Wednesday gave this advice to senators implicated in the pork barrel scam: “Eat, blank and die.”

An angry Santiago, who appeared for the first time since the 16th Congress opened, said criminal charges should be filed against senators in the scandal.

“The government should at least file criminal charges against those public officials involved in the PDAF scam,” Santiago said in a press briefing.

How can you not get mad when reports have clearly “linked at least five senators in the alleged P10-billion scam: Senators Bong Revilla, Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada, Gringo Honasan and Bongbong Marcos”?

Filipinos need to get their priorities right. But then again, maybe they already do. While there does not seem to be much payoff in getting angry over political scandals considering that most of these have gone unpunished for DECADES, for the ordinary Filipino there is a small but quicker payoff when their other heads get angry over sex scandals.

It’s just economics, stupid.

  1. Rap/Hip-Hop/Rock/Country/Blues singer Kid Rock once commented God allowed man to create porn so that ugly guys could get laid 😉

      1. Dahil siguro hindi tumama sa interest nila? Kahit sinong tao, pinoy man o hindi, basta hindi part of interest niya ang pinag-uusapan kahit napakalaki o napakahalaga ng usapin ay binabalewala o nababalewala agad.

        Sa salita ko po siguro parang dumedepensa ako pero sinasabi ko lang po kung ano naoobserbahan ko.

        1. Ito na nga ang suliranin ng lipunang Pilipino. Bakit walang pagpapahalaga sa isang bagay na may malalim na epekto sa buhay ng lahat ng taong nakatira sa Pilipinas? Bakit higit na binibigyan pansin ng sambayanan ang isang “video” na wala namang saysay?

          Yung nabanggit mo na napansin mong asal ng Pilipino — doon na rin nagsimula itong sanaysay ni Ms Kate. Kaya ako nag-tanong sa una kong sagot sayo: Bakit ganoon na lang ang kilos ng Pilipinong madalas sa “social media network” at hindi pinupuna ang higit na mahalagang bagay na gaya ng “pork barrel?” Hindi ba maling ugali ito?

      2. “Bakit walang pagnanais ang karamihan ng mga Pilipino na alamin ang katotohanan tungkol sa ‘pork barrel’?”
        =====

        Tila baga baliko ang laman ng tanong na ‘yan. Bakit ko nasabi ‘yan? Ilang linggo na ang lahat halos laman ng mga balita sa TV, diaryo at telebisyon, maliban pa ‘yung sa mga kanto at mga barberya pati na rin sa palenge, na ang usapan ay patungkol sa pork barrel.

        Meron pa ngang martsang ginawa na kung saan ang mga tao dumalo ay nagpahayag ng kanilang damdamin laban sa isyu ng pork barrel. Wala na yatang hindi nakakikilala kay Napoles sa Pilipinas e.

        Dito na lang sa blog na ito, halos nuventa’y nueve porsiyento na binuksang paksa sa nagdaang tatlong lingo o mahigit pa e patukoy sa pork barrel at alingasngas sa gobyerno.

        Kung pagnanais lang ang pag-uusapan, wala ng matibay na patunay kundi ‘yang mga paksang nabanggit na ‘yan.

        1. Leb,

          Hindi ka na naman nag-iisip. Nag-umpisa ang pagtalakay na ito sa “tweet” ni Ms Ilda. Binanggit niya na “most Pinoys would rather read about Chito, Neri, Wally & Yosh’s s*x video than about #porkbarrelscam.” Ang batayan — “site statistics” ng “Twitter.” Ang pinag-uusapan dito ay ang “Twitter” bilang larawan ng kabuuan ng lipunang Pilipino. Hindi siya itinuturing na isang ganap o lubos na pangangatawan ng buong sambayanan.

        2. JS, Twitter ba ‘ikamo? Pagpaumanhin mo dahil wala akong nabasa sa sinulat mo tungkol do’n. Heto basahin mo uli ‘yung sinabi mo:

          Johnny Saint – “Mababaw talaga kung ang gagamitin mong dahilan ay ang kamangmangan ng Pilipino. Ang dapat mong itanong ay “Bakit walang pagnanais ang karamihan ng mga Pilipino na alamin ang katotohanan tungkol sa ‘pork barrel’?”

          Hindi ko alam kung anong pag-iisip pa ang gagawin ko d’yan para malaman kong may Twitter na nakasaad sa sinulat mo. Kung ‘yon ang iyong intensiyon, at hindi ko nakuha, pasensiya na.

        3. The reference to Twitter is at the VERY BEGINNING of Ms Kate’s article. If you did not know that, how much more did you not understand — AGAIN — from what was written?

          Ang kailangan lang ay tamang pag-iisip ng NORMAL na tao.

        4. JS, humingi ako ng sinserong pasensiya dahil handa akong tanggapin ‘yung paliwanag mo pero dahil nagbitaw ka ng pananalita na may laman hayaan mong ipakita ko sa ‘yo na ang tunay, totoo at normal na dahilan kung bakit nag-komento ako sa sinabi mo.

          Please, do not drag the name of other people in defending what you wrote. I was quoting not the article or the reference on Twitter, I was quoting YOUR post in response to Kiko. To refresh your mind here’s what he said in his post

          Kilo – ” Mas mababaw kasi na usapin yung scandal kesa sa pork barrel. Hindi lahat kasi naiintidihan ang usaping pork barrel scam eh.” (No reference Twitter)

          And here’s your response:

          JS – “Mababaw talaga kung ang gagamitin mong dahilan ay ang kamangmangan ng Pilipino. Ang dapat mong itanong ay “Bakit walang pagnanais ang karamihan ng mga Pilipino na alamin ang katotohanan tungkol sa ‘pork barrel’?” (Again, no reference to Twitter)

          Finger-pointing will not explain what you actually wrote. That’s not a normal way to do things.

    1. Let me suggest starting point . Figure out what your real values are and find people and media that address those values or the lack of them. Also try to find somebody who talks to you that assumes you have a brain.

  3. What could I recall to describe this….

    Heritage of Smallness by Nick Joaquin;

    Low-hanging fruit… easier to judge Miranda and Bayola than our politicians;

    Small minds talk about people – Eleanor Roosevelt. Focus on personalities rather than ideas.

    Filipinos love face over substance; love outrage fads to effect the illusion of moral high ground – me

    All used to great effect by mass media.

      1. It depends, I suppose, on how boring your life is. Or how miserable (which, in retrospect, can feel pretty much the same). You end up grabbing any chance there is to look down on others — especially strangers — just to forget your own misery.

  4. This whole hullabaloo, plus that new “impending rice crisis”… Pork Barrel Scam, prepare to be sidetracked! More will definitely come, courtesy of you-know-who-they-are.

  5. The problem of filling criminal charges with relation to the pork barrel scam is the selective nature of it.

    It target mostly opposition members or potential candidates for 2016. If they are truly serious they should even file criminal charges to the likes of Mar Roxas, Alacala and everyone that are implicated regardless of political ally or not.

    As Alfredo Lim says: “The law applies to all, otherwise none at all.” (Oh what the irony being a yellow)

  6. The last time I was in Bangkok on business, the driver of the taxi I rode to an early evening meeting asked me if I was Filipino and after I said yes, he immediately gave me brochures of a special kind of ‘massage spa’.

    Then, later that evening, when the Japanese businessman whom I had a meeting with went with me to Patpong to buy a few trinkets and stuff, bar hawkers were all over us saying ‘Filipino? Wan a paki paki show?’

    I guess, Pinoys are recognized immediately for certain interests.

    1. I guess, Pinoys are recognized immediately for certain interests.
      ======

      I think that’s an inaccurate observation. The circumstances that you narrated is pretty much a common situation that usually happens to a tourist male in other countries.

      In the Phil. whenever an American or a foreign guy pass by in places of recreation persistent offers, to the point of being harassed, of a good time come their way.

      And sex, let’s be honest, is everybody’s interest.

  7. Well Ms. Kate certainly appears to be quite the informed young Lady, NICE!

    it is no crime to be having sex. so many people watching this seems to point out that maybe Filipino’s are not getting enough of it.
    if that is all it takes to side-track an entire nation of people, I’d have to say…and IRONICALLY too: Your fucked!

  8. Ha ha! Bjorn/Gerry, I’m not really *that* young, though I do try to be a lady which I hopefully succeed at 75% of the time (passing grade, lol!).
