In recent history, one of the greatest causes of damage to the Philippine economy was the 12 hour blackouts that were caused by Cory Aquino’s FAILURE with regards to inaction in addressing power infrastructure requirements in the 1980s. She canceled upgrades which should have been implemented, for no other reason than they were conceived under the Marcos era. This was compounded by the Aquinos’ FAILURE to maintain peace and order which culminated with the Enrile/Honasan coup. It sent investors and their FDI in a beeline out the door.

By the end of CORAZON AQUINO’s term GDP growth rate according to the IMF was -0.578%! The result of six years of an abysmal dearth of economic vision compounded by natural disasters and policies that polarized Filipino society and the political establishment. Not to mention an inability to control the military that resulted in six coup attempts.
Fidel Ramos’ presidency initiated deregulation. This saw a steady rise in the GDP reaching a growth rate of 5.846% in 1996. Then the Asian Financial Crisis hit. Coupled with the election of Erap Estrada — more famous for his serial womanizing and drunken binges than administrative ability — GDP growth rate dropped to -0.577% in 1998.
Under Gloria Arroyo’s presidency GDP growth AGAIN INCREASED STEADILY, reaching a high of 7.117% in 2007. When the sub-prime mortgage crisis hit in 2008 GDP growth again dropped but recovered over the next two years, reaching 7.632% in 2010.
In the year following BS Aquino’s election, thanks to policies which undid Gloria Arroyo’s efforts, GDP GROWTH DROPPED TO 3.718% IN 2011. Instead of continuing the efforts of previous administrations, it was more important for BS Aquino to destroy his predecessors so that he could claim credit for something that was started long before he came to power. And as the IMF has shown, the negative GDP growth was under CORY AQUINO and Erap Estrada.

Hong Kong also enjoys a great deal of human freedom. Before the turnover, you’d never have seen any evidence of suppression of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, or any other human freedom that democratic, free peoples regard as important.
In contrast, the Philippines’ centrally controlled, over-regulated and restrictive economy, which was largely initiated by the Aquino 1987 constitution, earned Filipinos the appellation “SICK MAN OF ASIA.” We have a high incidence of journalists being murdered. We have NO FREEDOM OF INFORMATION law.

For me, the yellow mob devotion really comes down to two things. The first is the money as you’ve already mentioned; they’re in it to manoeuvre the situation to enable them to extract a personal reward, either cash up front or power/influence that leads to cash later on.
